Einsames Sterben und ein sozial unbegleitetes Lebensende sind alltägliche, doch häufig verborgene soziale Probleme. In einer vielschichtigen sozialwissenschaftlichen Analyse verknüpft Susanne Loke Erkenntnisse der Einsamkeits-, Sterbe- und Ungleichheitsforschung im städtischen Raum zu innovativen Ergebnissen. Sie veranschaulicht die Ambivalenzen eines einsamen und unentdeckten Todes als Endpunkt einer abwärts gerichteten Spirale der Einsamkeit und sozialen Isolation bzw. Exklusion. Die Feldforschung in einem sterbenden Sozialraum gibt marginalisierten Menschen das Wort, die sonst nicht gehört werden, und lässt die Leser*innen teils beklommen zurück.

« Penser ma mort c’est aussi bien penser moi sans le monde que le monde sans moi, c’est penser à la rupture d’un rapport. Où l’angoisse commence c’est quand, au sentiment du monde comme réalité empirique, nous substituons une présence du monde en nous, qui serait le temps... Je n’étais pas plus satisfait du monde mais du moins je me sentais en sécurité dans un monde qui ne me satisfaisait pas. Ce sont ces deux conditions qui ont pu faire place en moi à l’angoisse de la mort : celle de disparaître non au monde (empiriquement) mais celle de disparaître au sens absolu... ». Par toutes sortes de détours ce texte ramène à un centre, la distinction entre la peur de mourir qui concerne le texte de la vie, et l’angoisse devant la mort, qui elle ne concerne « rien ». L’auteur, à qui le genre même du Journal permet de se contredire et dans ces contradictions mêmes de retrouver toujours les mêmes évidences, s’appuie sur trois refuges, la réflexion bouddhique (et indienne), celle d’Epicure, la pensée christique (le « il faut qu’il vive »). Des analyses particulières s’entremêlent, celle du suicide (« le suicide s’explique parce que l’angoisse de la mort ne peut contrebalancer le dégoût de la vie, sans quoi il n’y aurait pas de suicide »), la peine de mort, le couple... Aux trois points d’appui qui reviennent explicitement — érotisme, travail, art — le quatrième que l’auteur ne nomme pas, l’ami mort, est peut-être le plus présent. Le livre s’achève par un bref rappel de réflexions sur la mort, depuis la philosophie antique et celle de la Renaissance (Montaigne), puis Descartes, Pascal, Schopenhauer, des modernes enfin, de Bergson, Simmel, Heidegger à Jean-Paul Sartre et Paul Ricoeur ; enfin quatre littérateurs, Alain, Paul Valéry, Paul Léautaud et André Malraux.

The human body is the locus of meaning, personhood, and our sense of the possibility of sanctity. The desecration of the human corpse is a matter of universal revulsion, taboo in virtually all human cultures. Not least for this reason, the unburied corpse quickly becomes a focal point of political salience, on the one hand seeming to express the contempt of state power toward the basic claims of human dignity--while on the other hand simultaneously bringing into question the very legitimacy of that power. In Unburied Bodies: Subversive Corpses and the Authority of the Dead, James Martel surveys the power of the body left unburied to motivate resistance, to bring forth a radically new form of agency, and to undercut the authority claims made by state power. Ranging across time and space from the battlefields of ancient Thebes to the streets of Ferguson, Missouri, and taking in perspectives from such writers as Sophocles, Machiavelli, Walter Benjamin, Hannah Arendt, James Baldwin, Judith Butler, Thomas Lacqueur, and Bonnie Honig, Martel asks why the presence of the abandoned corpse can be seen by both authorities and protesters as a source of power, and how those who have been abandoned or marginalized by structures of authority can find in a lifeless body fellow accomplices in their aspirations for dignity and humanity.

Sterben ist ein Phänomen, das keinem Gesellschaftsmitglied erspart bleibt. Oftmals zeigt es sich in der Gegenwart in Form eines langen, konfrontativen Verlaufs. Wird seine Bewältigung zum Problem, bieten Hospizvereine Sterbebegleitungen an. Diese ehrenamtliche Tätigkeit wird in Vorbereitungskursen zum Gegenstand von Bildungspraktiken. Wie wird das Begleiten vermittelt, welche Bedeutungen erhält das Sterben und welcher gesellschaftliche Umgang mit der Endlichkeit wird dabei sichtbar? Diese ethnographische Studie widmet sich einem sozialen Bereich, der explizit macht, was in verwandten Feldern implizit bleibt.

Hacia finales del siglo XVIII, un selecto grupo de acaudalados se interesó por conseguir algún título de nobleza con el fin de aumentar su honor y prestigio, valores de una alta estima en aquélla época. De esta forma, la sociedad novohispana quedó coronada con condes y marqueses que impusieron un código de comportamiento que fue imitado y reproducido por el resto de los grupos sociales. Esta es una historia que se basa, principalmente, en las últimas voluntades de estos hombres y mujeres: los testamentos. Su rigor científico llamará la atención entre los lectores por su novedad, por la ambición de su planteamiento, por su acertado enfoque crítico, por su estilo narrativo y por sus valiosos aportes a la historia social y de las mentalidades en México. El interés de esta historia reside principalmente en que tiende un puente entre la formación de la nobleza y el ritual que rodeaba a la muerte.
